The answers below cover almost everything guests ask before booking. Two points are worth pulling out of the list, because they are the ones that change whether this place is right for you.

The bathroom is outside. It is walled, private, plumbed and has hot water, but you walk out of the caravan to reach it. In winter that is a cold thirty seconds twice a day. Most guests decide it is a fair trade for showering under an open sky at sunrise. If you are certain it is not, book something else and enjoy it more.

The last seven kilometres is gravel. A maintained farm road through the mountains, fine for an ordinary car, slow rather than difficult. It is also the reason there is nobody else out here.

Where exactly is Karoo Stone Camper?

On Algerynskraal Farm, with the gate on the R62 west of Ladismith in the Western Cape. The coordinates are -33.658812, 21.070687 and the last 7 km from the gate is a gravel farm road.

How far is it from Cape Town?

Roughly 300 km and about three hours, usually via the N1 to Worcester and then the R62 through Montagu and Barrydale.

Do I need a 4x4?

No. The 7 km farm road is maintained gravel and an ordinary car drives it comfortably at a sensible speed. Do it in daylight the first time.

How many people does it sleep?

Three. One double bed and one single that converts to a seating area during the day. All ages are welcome.

Is there a minimum stay?

Yes, two nights.

Is the bathroom inside?

No. It is a private walled outdoor bathroom a few steps from the caravan, with a hot shower, a basin and a flush toilet. It is yours alone for the stay.

Is the hot tub included?

Yes, along with the firewood. It is wood-fired and takes one to two hours to heat once you light it.

Is there a swimming pool?

There is a splash pool for summer, alongside the hot tub.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, at no extra charge. This is a working stock farm, so dogs must stay with you and under control around the livestock and free-range poultry.

Is there phone signal or wifi?

Signal is poor and should not be relied on. Treat the stay as offline and tell anyone who may need you before you leave.

Is there electricity?

Yes. There is power at the caravan, a bar fridge, a single-plate stove and a kettle, plus hot water and a water connection.

Can I braai?

Yes. There is a braai, a firepit and firewood supplied. Most meals here happen on the fire.

Where do I buy food?

Ladismith, about half an hour away, has a supermarket, fuel and a bottle store. Buy everything before you turn onto the farm road.

Are children welcome?

Yes, all ages. The booking sleeps three in total, so it suits a couple with one child.

Are there other guests on the property?

No. One booking is taken at a time.

What is the weather like?

Hot dry summers often into the mid-thirties, cold clear winter nights near freezing, and low unreliable rain in any season. Pack for both ends of the day whenever you come.

What should I bring?

Food, drink, ice, a head torch, a warm layer, sunblock and binoculars. Bedding and towels are provided.
