What this is
One caravan, one booking at a time
Karoo Stone Camper is a single self-catering caravan on Algerynskraal Farm, a working stock farm beside the R62 between Barrydale and Ladismith in the Klein Karoo. It sleeps three, it takes one booking at a time, and the nearest other guests are a long way away.
The caravan sits under its own pergola with a lawn, a braai, a firepit and a shaded lounge around it. The bathroom is outside and walled in, with a hot shower, a basin and a flush toilet. A wood-fired hot tub stands in the open a few steps away, facing the mountains. In summer there is a splash pool; the river is a short walk from the caravan.
It is built for people who want the Karoo without a five-hour drive and without a tent. Park alongside, carry your bag ten metres, light the fire.

The hot tub
Heated with wood, pointed at the mountains
The tub is fired with wood, not electricity, so it takes an hour or two to come up and then holds heat deep into the night. There is no light pollution out here, which is the real reason people book it: you sit in hot water in the dark and the Milky Way is simply there, edge to edge.
Winter is when it earns its keep. The Karoo drops cold and clear after sunset and the contrast between the air and the water is the whole point. In summer the splash pool handles the afternoons and the tub waits for dark.
The camper
A caravan that does not move, set up properly
Inside there is a made-up double bed, a single bed that folds into a seating area, a dinette with a table, and a kitchenette with a bar fridge, a single-plate stove, a kettle, crockery and cutlery. Bedding and towels are provided.
Almost everything else happens outside: the braai, the firepit, the dishwashing stand, the shower. The pergola and reed screens take the sun and the wind off, which in this part of the world is the difference between a good afternoon and a short one.
The farm

Algerynskraal is a working farm, not a lodge with a game fence. The home pens hold camels, alpacas, angora goats, cattle, donkeys and a loud population of free-range chickens, and they will come and look at you long before you go looking at them.
The wild side is quieter and less guaranteed. Over a two-night stay guests regularly see gemsbok, bushbuck, hares, mongoose and baboons; Cape foxes and jackal turn up after dark if you are still and lucky. Nothing here is fed or staged, which is exactly why it counts when it happens.

Getting here
About three hours from Cape Town, mostly on tar
The farm gate is on the R62 west of Ladismith. Most people run the N1 to Worcester, drop onto the R62 at Ashton and follow it through Montagu and Barrydale, which is the good version of the drive. From the gate it is 7 km of gravel farm road through the mountains. An ordinary car manages it comfortably; do it in daylight the first time.

How far is Karoo Stone Camper from Cape Town?
About three hours. You run the N1 to Worcester and pick up the R62 through Montagu and Barrydale, or take the R62 the whole way. The farm gate is on the R62 west of Ladismith, and the last 7 km is a gravel farm road through the mountains.
Does the hot tub work all year?
Yes. It is wood-fired, so it is heated on request whenever you want it, and it is at its best on cold Karoo nights. In summer most guests use the splash pool during the day and light the tub after sunset.
Do I need a 4x4 to get there?
No. The final 7 km is a maintained gravel farm road and an ordinary car handles it at a sensible speed. Drive it in daylight the first time and take the corrugations slowly.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, dogs are welcome. This is a working farm with livestock and free-range poultry, so keep your dog with you and under control around the animals.
What do I need to bring?
Food, drink and anything you cannot do without. The kitchenette has a single-plate stove, a bar fridge, a kettle, crockery and cutlery, and firewood is supplied. Bedding and towels are provided. The nearest shops are in Ladismith.
